Web21 jun. 2024 · Cystatin C is a serum protein produced by nucleated cells that has traditionally been viewed as a biomarker for renal function [ 11 ]. However, recent studies have demonstrated that Cystatin C is expressed in atherosclerotic lesions and may predict adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with CAD and PAD [ 12, 13, 14 ]. Most, although not all, members of this superfamily are potent inhibitors of cysteine peptidases.
